7 steps to setup WordPress blog easily
Before you can setup a WordPress blog let me brief you up on what we learnt in the previous lesson. You need a domain name and a hosting account. A domain name is the address of your site, and hosting is the store house of your site which stores all its files.
BlueHost is the #1 recommended web hosting company by WordPress itself. BlogEarner.com is hosted on their servers and I have had no issues with them, so I recommend it too. With a robust support system in place, a money-back guarantee and hosting over 2 million websites, they are undoubtedly at the very top.
This is a company where you can get a domain name for FREE when you sign up for hosting. So both your needs of starting a WordPress blog – domain name and web hosting – are taken care of by BlueHost itself.
Now let’s get started with the steps to setup WordPress blog
Before you follow the instructions below, click here to open Bluehost in a different window or tab.
Update: Some screenshots may not match the current images on Bluehost exactly. But that's fine. You can continue using them as a guide to get you started.
1. On the page that opens after you click Bluehost, click on the ‘Get Started’ button.
2. There are three hosting plans. The ‘basic’ plan is enough for most people getting started.
You can upgrade later at any time if you want to. So click on the ‘select‘ button under ‘basic’.
3. On the next page, you’ll register a domain name.
If you already have registered a domain name, enter it in the box under ‘Use a domain you own‘ and click ‘next‘. If you don’t have a domain name, you can register a domain name for FREE by entering a name that you want in the ‘Create a new domain‘ box.
If the domain name you entered is not available, you’ll be asked to try again. You’ll see a list of alternate suggestions that you can select from.
If there isn’t a name on the list that you like, try your search again. Scroll down and enter another domain name in the ‘new domain‘ box and click ‘next‘.
If the name you selected is available, you’ll see a success message on the next page after you click ‘next‘.
Tip: When you choose a domain name, pick one that reflects the type of blog you’re setting up. Make it short, catchy and memorable.
4. On the next page, enter your signup information.
There are three sections that you are going to fill in here.
a) ‘Account information‘ is where you enter your personal information.
b) ‘Package information‘ is where you select your account plan. You can also pick add-on services such as backup, security, and others. At this time though, I would not recommend you choose any of them.
Also, if you would like to save money, then I will recommend you select the 36 months plan, as that turns out to be the cheapest per month. You may wonder why you should start off with such a long period plan, but the fact is that you can cancel this hosting plan at anytime and get a full refund for the remaining duration.
c) ‘Payment information‘ is where you enter your credit card information.
5. Hit ‘submit’ and on the next page click on the ‘create your password’ button.
6. Once you choose your password you’re all set to login to your newly created Bluehost account.
7. Installing WordPress
After you have registered a domain name and created hosting, you will need to install WordPress. Doing that is a breeze.
- Log in to your Bluehost Hosting account.
- On the side menu on the left open the ‘My Sites’ tab.
- Click on the ‘Create Site’ button.
- Enter your ‘Site Name’ and ‘Site Tagline’ and click Next.
- Select your domain from the drop-down menu.
- Choose the directory it should be installed into and click Next.
You’re almost done! Now is when you will see a message that reads that your WordPress installation is complete.
On this page click on the ‘CREDENTIALS’ button. Here’s where you will find your login information with which you will be able to login to your blog. This information will be available only for 12 hours, so it will be wise to write down these login credentials and keep it in a safe place. You will also receive an email from Bluehost confirming your successful blog setup.
You can log into your WordPress dashboard by visiting http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin/.
